Meet the Youth Councillors – Jess Consterdine
Hi, I’m Jess and I’m the Greater Manchester representative for Oldham Youth Council. I wanted to join Oldham Youth Council as a way to build my confidence and make new friends. I ran for elections in 2016, I took an active role in all of the campaigns that I could, including a discrimination campaign that included a trip to Poland (check out http://oldhamyc.com/listen/2017-poland/)
I started getting into representation on a wider North West scale while attending YouthforiaAn organisation in which youth councillors from the North West meet up and work on campaigns and training. More. I started attending North West events about the devolutionDevolution is a term in politics meaning the devolving of powers from central government to local government. The devolution can be mainly financial, e.g. giving regions a budget which was formerly administered by central government. It can also be political More of power towards the Manchester region. Elections were run to have a elected role for this position, I happily got it and have been working with Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCAThe Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is made up of representatives from the ten Greater Manchester councils (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan) and a Mayor, who work with other local services, businesses, communities and other partners to improve the Greater Manchester region.
