MEETING WITH GERARD AND ELAINE

GERARD JONES – MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CHILDRENS AND YOUNG PEOPLES SERVICES

ELAINE DEVANEY – DIRECTOR OF CHILDRENS SOCIAL SERVICES

Within our last meeting of the year, we had the two newest members of Oldham Council’s managing team join us to learn about our work. Gerard Jones (Managing Director of Children and Young People’s Services) and Elaine Devaney (Director of Children’s Social Services) came to sit in our meeting to discuss what we are currently doing to improve the lives of young people in Oldham.

Within our meeting, we largely discussed the variety of work that current and previous Youth Councillors have participated in, such as:

  • What is Oldham Youth Council?
  • Motions to Full Council
  • The Knife Crime Report
  • Work within the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority
  • Regional Work with Youthforia
  • National Work with British Youth Council and Members of Youth Parliament
  • Consultation Work with Make Your Mark
  • Attendance and Participation within All Party Parliamentary Groups
  • Work going into the Youth Summit
  • Questions and Answers

Interesting discussions did occur around the work that was discussed.

VICE CHAIR ELECTIONS

Due to the departure of a previous chair, a vice chair election has been called for this meeting in order to rectify the current gap within the leadership. For this election, candidates Hamra and Melissa had one and a half minutes to put their case forward to attending Youth Councillors for why they should be the next Vice Chair. Following a vote taken within a previous meeting, Youth Councillors were provided with manifestos written by each candidate prior to the meeting.

After passionate speeches and questions put forward by Youth Councillors, the Youth Councillors had decided to vote Hamra in as their next Vice Chair.

YOUTH SUMMIT

The Chair, Tia, and Chris & Jodie gave an update to the Youth Council about the current operations occurring for the Youth Summit which will happen from the 8th February – 14th February 2020. Youth Councillors were also given key dates where their involvement may either be mandatory or voluntary.

EVENTS AND TRIPS

Events Officer Karl gave present Youth Councillors an update on the upcoming events that Youth Councillors can attend.
