Chair’s Chronicles – October 2019

Chair’s Chronicles – October 2019

The current Chair of Oldham Youth Council is Tia Henderson. Tia’s role is to lead the Youth Council either in our meetings, during campaigns or meeting with decision makers. Below is brief summary of what the Youth Council has been up to in the past month.

September seemed to fly by, Oldham Youth Council have been very busy. At the start of September the Our Oldham exhibition was launched at Oldham library. We did a blind auction to raise money over £275 for the Youth Mayor’s charity fund Real Change, that supports preventing homelessness. We spent a few weeks travelling around Oldham taking pictures of the beauty that is within and surrounding areas. We then decorated frames and photo holders and sold them in the blind auction.

One thing I would like to highlight from the last month is that from the first week of September young people, aged 16-18, can use their Our Pass to gain free bus travel across Greater Manchester. Some of our members, who represent Oldham on the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority (GMYCA), helped develop the Our pass. If you are at college or in an apprenticeship and still don’t have an Our Pass you can go to https://ourpass.co.uk/ to check all the amazing discounts and opportunities you get along with the free bus travel.

Oldham Youth Council were honoured to have The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mark Isaac Adlestone Esq OBE DL, as a guest in our last full meeting of September. The High Sheriff talked about his role and his proudest moment and we had a 2 way Q&A where we were able to find out more about the responsibilities of being High Sheriff. He even brought his sword!!!

One thing we can’t forget is taking part in the recruitment process for Oldham Council’s new Managing Director Children and Young People and the Director of Children’s Social Care . It was an huge privilege and all 4 candidates were amazing. I would like to formally congratulate Gerard Jones (Managing Director Children and Young People) and Elaine Devaney (Director of Children’s Social Care). in their new roles. It was a pleasure to interview you both and we look forward to working with you in the coming months!
