OYC minutes – 18/09/2024

Motion Planning:

We have received apologies from the Proud Trust, so they will be moved over to next week.

Chris shared reflections of the last motion to full council – delivered by Leah and Lucy last week – and explained to YCllrs the nature of the amendment put forward.

One of the previous ideas for a motion would be to ask Oldham Council to write to the Government to push the Votes at 16 bill, but this seems obsolete now.

To inspire us, Chris read out what past motions to Council were and how they were received.

We discussed potential motion ideas and how we can get more ideas from young people in small groups, then fed them back to the full group.

Independent Advisory Group:

The current Independent Advisory Group has been disbanded, and YCllrs have to reapply to join.

The representatives were Ali, Tom and Penelope.

Penelope will be stepping down from this role, and this will give other YCllrs (aged 16 and over) the opportunity to join.

We decided the best way to do this would be for Ali and Tom to keep their roles automatically, and we hold an election for the 3rd member. At the same time we will appoint 3 people to deputise, when they cannot attend meetings.

At the next meeting, all those who want to take part will give a presentation and we will elect a new representative.

Youth Scrutiny Panel:

Chris took the names of people who want to join the Youth Scrutiny Panel – where young people review body camera footage of the Police.

Beeheard:

Due to scheduling commitments, Chris will be unable to staff Beeheard. He urged the people attending to find their own ways there, since the event will still go ahead.

Lad’s group:

Wider membership will be delayed until Chris can establish his ‘core’ group of members (those who have asked to join will receive an email about this).

Community Radio

At the last Youth Mayor Making, Oldham Community Radio said it is happy to publicise things done by Youth Council on the radio.

They have asked if the Youth Council will talk for Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week, and YCllrs decided that they want to take part.

YCllrs were asked to think about what the best way to execute this is, and this will be addressed at a later meeting.

Events:

23rd September – mental health workshop at Rock St.

1st November – trip to Camelot Theme Park for Scare City. YCllrs must be 14 and over to participate.

24th September – employment fair at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

13th October – Youthforia in Oldham.

AOB:

Hassan – asking for the status of the Instagram, since it was hacked last week.

Tom – since the next meeting will be Leah’s birthday, asked if people can bring things in.

Chris – asking if the Youth Council wants a Halloween fancy dress meeting.

Tom – congratulating Leah on her first meeting as acting chair.
