OYC minutes – 02/10/2024

The Proud Trust:

The Proud Trust are an LGBT charity, and Ava spoke to YCllrs about the support on offer from them.

They offer a wide range of support, such as:

  • Youth groups for 13-18 year olds. These are youth led projects, and can be used as a social space.
  • The Proud Connections, which offers help through live chat, mentors and 1:1 support.
  • Parents and Carers Support Groups.
  • The LGBT Groups in School’s Alliance, which can help with setting up an LGBT group in schools.

The majority of activities are ran through the Proud Place in Manchester, and Ava invited the Youth Council to keep an eye out for activities ran there.

UKYP manifesto submissions:

UKYP is scrapping their old manifesto and are asking all MYPs to submit two policy suggestions for the new one.

Louie wanted to consult the Youth Council before submitting his.

We split into groups to think of suggestions.

After feeding back to the group, Louie took down contributions and will turn them into policy ideas.

Youth Voice Report:

Chris presented the findings of the Youth Voice Census, going through the recommendations in detail, as these could be used as the basis for a motion to full council.

We identified that mental health services, T levels and apprenticeships are things we should investigate further.

Independent Advisory Group:

Lucy and Aaron stood in election to be the third member of the representatives for the Independent Advisory Group.

Candidates had 40 minutes to prep a 1 minute speech, and an election would be held.

Lucy was elected as the representative along with Tom and Ali, and Aaron will deputise, attending when the representatives cannot attend.

Events and trips:

9th October – all YCllrs are required to attend a performance and workshop by Credible Witness at Rock St.

13th October – Youthforia (held at Madhlo).

26th-27th October – MYP annual conference.

1st November – Scare City trip.

AOB:

Tom – can we invite the new Director of Children and Young People to a Youth Council meeting? This then opened up to a wider discussion as to who else we can invite.

Raphael/Ava – asking when the Spooky World and Alton Towers trip will be.

Chris – read a letter from Angela Rayner MP in response to the Votes at 16 letter sent out a month ago.
