Youth Council Knife Crime Report

The 10th of July saw Oldham Youth Council submitting a motion, to Oldham Council’s Full Council meeting, regarding Knife Crime. This comes from Oldham Youth Council having taken up Knife Crime as one of its main priorities for the 2018/20 Term of Office, due to ‘Put an end to knife crime’ being the top issue coming out of the 2018 Make Your Mark Consultation, having 2,167 votes.

The motion came from a report produced by Oldham Youth Council regarding Knife Crime. Youth Councillors consulted with young people within the borough, asking seven questions regarding the topic, with the repossess collated into the report, which can be seen at the bottom of this post. This report details responses from the ‘Ten Forward’ conducted by the Youth Councillors. Along side the ‘Ten Forward’, the report also details responses to a question that flips the subject, and focuses on why young people don’t carry knives.

After taking the motion to the Full Oldham Council Meeting, Oldham Council had agreed to invest an extra £100k into Youth Services

“We propose that Oldham Council recognises that Oldham is committed to providing quality support and opportunities for all its young people and we ask that Oldham Council carry out an overview and scrutiny of the current youth offer across Oldham to ensure there is a broad range of high quality activities available to all young people, that are accessible, regardless of where they live.”

This is what was proposed at the end of the motion put forward by Oldham Youth Council, which can be seen in Item 7 here.
