Who is a Care Leaver?
The level of support young people receive from the After Care Team depends on your legal status as a Care Leaver. Your legal status will fit into one of the following groups.
- Eligible Child – Someone aged 16 and 17 who has been looked after for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14 and who is still looked after.
- Relevant Child – Someone aged 16 and 17 who has been looked after for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14 and who has left care.
- Former Relevant Child – Someone aged over 18 who was previously in the ‘eligible’ or ‘relevant’ groups. Local authorities support these people at least until aged 21 or longer if in education or training.
- Qualifying Child – Anyone aged at least 16 but is under 21 with respect to who a special guardianship order is in force (or was in force when they reached 18) and was looked after immediately after the making of that order.
At any time after reaching the age of 16 but while he was still a child was, but is no longer, looked after.
