Care Leavers Resuming Education or Training Post 21yrs

A Voice for Oldham's Children Looked After and Care Leavers

Introduction

There has been a change in the law which means that care leavers up to their 25th birthday who tell their local authority they have returned, or want to resume a programme of education or training after the age of 21 years will be entitled to continuing support from a Personal Advisor from your Local Authority.  Are you:

  • A care leaver aged under 25 years
  • No longer receiving support from your After Care Service (‘your case is closed’) and
  • Wanting to start education or training or have already gone back to education or training.

What is meant by a programme of Education or Training?

A programme of education or training is interpreted broadly and may include options such as:

  • Basic Skills Course
  • Numeracy and Literacy
  • Further Education
  • Apprenticeship
  • Higher Education/University
  • Vocational Course
